Where to Buy Sewing Patterns

Where to find the best sewing patterns (for beginners!)

Paper, PDF, or digital — here’s where to start your pattern hunt.

When you’re ready to move from small projects to garments, you’ll need a sewing pattern.
But where do you actually get them?

The big names — Simplicity, McCall’s, Vogue, Butterick — are classic and great for beginners.
You’ll find them at Hobby Lobby or independent fabric shops.

They’re paper-based and come with printed instructions.

But there’s a whole new world of independent pattern designers creating modern, beginner-friendly digital patterns.
You can download, print at home, or send to a print shop.

Some of my favorites:

  • Helen's Closet (clean, clear, reliable)
  • Tilly and the Buttons (adorable modern designs)
  • Grainline Studio (great for everyday wear)
  • True Bias (Denver-based!)
  • Friday Pattern Company (fun, approachable styles)

Each has detailed tutorials, community photos, and beginner guidance — things the big brands sometimes lack.

So whether you want to pick up a tissue-paper envelope or download a digital file, start with a simple project like a tote, skirt, or pajama pants.

Once you’ve made your first garment, you’ll realize how empowering it is to create something that fits you perfectly.
