These are not manufacturing mysteries — they're the predictable results of specific construction shortcuts.

Understanding what makes a well-built bag different from a poorly-built one is useful whether you're shopping for one or making one. And making one — specifically, constructing a fully structured, fully lined overnight duffle with a zip top and reinforced straps — is one of the most satisfying intermediate sewing projects available. Here's what goes into it.

Structure Starts with Interfacing

Interfacing is the hidden material that separates a bag with shape and body from one that flops and sags. It's a fusible or sew-in fabric that's applied to the wrong side of the outer fabric before construction begins, giving the bag its structure without being visible in the finished object.

For a structured bag like an overnight duffle, interfacing does several jobs simultaneously. It keeps the bag body from distorting under load. It gives the fabric enough stability to hold its shape when empty — the difference between a bag that sits up on its own and one that collapses into a pile. And it makes sewing significantly easier, because interfaced fabric feeds through the machine more predictably and handles topstitching more cleanly.

The weight of interfacing matters. A lightweight woven interfacing is appropriate for bags that need a little body without too much stiffness; a heavy sew-in interfacing is appropriate for bags that need real structure and will carry significant weight. The technique is counterintuitive the first time: you sew the side seams and bottom seam as usual, then pinch each corner so the side seam aligns with the bottom seam, and stitch across the resulting triangle. When the corner is cut and turned, the bag bottom flattens out into a proper base.

The size of the corner triangle determines the width of the base. A 3-inch corner triangle produces a 6-inch base; a 4-inch triangle produces an 8-inch base. Getting this measurement right — and getting it consistent across all four corners — is what makes a bag that sits flat and holds its shape under load rather than tipping and bunching.

Straps Built to Actually Carry Weight

A handle or strap that pulls away from a bag under load is one of the most common bag construction failures, and it's almost always a result of insufficient attachment rather than weak fabric. The strap itself is usually fine. The issue is how it's connected to the bag body.

A properly constructed strap attachment uses reinforced stitching — typically a box stitch (a rectangle of stitching with an X through it) at each attachment point. This distributes the stress of the load across a larger area of both the strap and the bag body, rather than concentrating it at a single point where thread is holding everything together.

For an overnight bag that will carry real weight — a week's worth of clothing, shoes, toiletries — this isn't a nicety. The strap attachment is the structural point that determines whether the bag works long-term or fails under load.

The Lining: Function, Not Just Finish

The finish is clean on both the inside and outside, with no visible raw edges anywhere.
